Prayers like gravel flung at the sky’s
window, hoping to attract the loved one’s
attention. But without visible plaits to let down
for the believer to climb up,
to what purpose open that far casement?
I would have refrained long since
but that peering once
through my locked fingers
I thought I detected
the movement of a curtain.
R.S. Thomas (1913-2000), 1986.
Most people have had at least one experience in life which can only be descried as 'out of this world.' I think of it as 'my personal miracle'! Some may describe it as a 'fantasy' upon which my imagination makes play. For others it is a 'divine presence or absence', the meaning of which may be found by religious belief of one sort or another. Wherever it happened, the experience defies attempts to describe it either in words or human logic. The Psalm writer shouted at God; 'Rouse yourself? Awake do not cast us off for ever! Why do you hide your face...? Rise up, come to our help. Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.' (Psalm 44:24-26)
