Tell the Truth

Tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind —
Emily Dickinson (1830-86),

Notes from the Compiler

'Her point is that sometimes the truth is told most powerfully when it is done indirectly, so that the other can hear. The truth when it is shouted may be inaudible. If you tell someone that they are a patriarchal dinosaur, they probably will not be helped!' In an address to a Synod of Catholic Bishops, Timothy Radcliffe, 'Listening Together', Minnesota, Liturgical Press, 2024, p. 81.
