Monk and first English historian, Bede was born near Sunderland and and wrote that his 'special delight was always to learn, to teach, and to write.' He finished his 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People' in 731 AD. See 1 Peter 2:19: 'You will do well to be attentive... as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.'
