Your Precious Life

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper…?

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel in the  grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it  you plan to do

With your one wild and precious life?

Mary Oliver (1935-2019), The Summer Day, 1990.

Notes from the Compiler

In 2015 Mary Oliver told an interviewer: ‘It was a very bad childhood for everybody, every member of the household, not just myself, I think. And I escaped it, barely, with years of trouble. But I did find the entire world in looking for something. But I got saved by poetry. And I got saved by the beauty of the world.' As this poem suggests and as the poet discovered, the beauty of this world presents me with a challenge: 'What do I plan to do with my life?'
