To every man there openeth
A Way, and Ways, and a Way.
And the High Soul climbs the High way,
And the Low Soul gropes the Low,
And in between, on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth
A High Way, and a Low.
And every man decideth
The Way his soul shall go.
John Oxenham (1852-1941)
William Arthur Dunkerley (the poet's real name) was a Deacon at Ealing Congregational Church. After the war and as a boy of eleven in South London, I attended Bromley 'Crusaders' class in which we were encouraged to make a decision to welcome Jesus into our hearts and lives - as our Saviour, Friend and Lord. It was a decision I have never regretted. This is a poem I remember from those days of my early discipleship.
