War

Waste of muscle, waste of brain,

Waste of patience, waste of pain,

Waste of manhood, waste of health,

Waste of beauty, waste of wealth,

Waste of blood, and waste of tears,

Waste of youth’s most precious years,

Waste of glory, waste of God,-

War!

Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (1883-1929), 1919.

Notes from the Compiler

Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy was an army chaplain gassed on the front line in in World War I (1914-18), an asthmatic and a smoker, who died when he was only 45 years old. In summing up a portrayal of Kennedy, one senior friend wrote at the time of his death: ‘He may best be described as an Evangelical at heart who loved and lived by the Catholic way of discipline and who suffers with worship.’ He believed passionately in the God in Christ who suffers with the world he dies to save. Speaking personally, he has helped me to understand in greater depth the meaning of the cross which was, from my first ‘conversion’ as a boy, the revelation of God’s call to an 'un-selfing' which brought me both personal peace and a purpose to life. But there was more. Yes, the saving death of Christ is for sin but it is also the saving call of God in Christ to a life of 'self-offering' in disciplined service, which was modelled by Jesus on the Cross, but also hopefully by 'faithful' disciples in their witness ever since.
